As we enter another school season, many believers are busy with back to school shopping for clothes and supplies. However it’s both essential and even of higher importance for the parents of school aged children to prepare your child spiritually and emotionally for the year ahead. Prayer and knowledge of the word of God can serve as the foundation of how your child spends their time at school and how they handle the relationships that can be formed in and around their place of learning.
Here are five areas of prayer and scripture to prepare your child for the upcoming school term.
A PRAYER OF PROTECTION
Your child faces attacks from the enemy on school grounds just as often as any other place of potential danger. The enemy knows the environment and where to attack. Guarding your child with a prayer of protection from bullies, teachers who aren’t called to the profession, mischievous activity and any other attempt by the devil is paramount to your child’s focus and success. Here are two scriptures to help your child with protection whether they have to stand their ground in faith against a bully or acknowledge rest in the covering of Jesus.
Exodus 14:13-14 And Moses said to the people,”Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.
2 Corinthians 4:8,9 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed, we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not forsaken, struck down, but not destroyed.
A PRAYER OF CONFIDENCE
The enemy knows he can attack in areas where our confidence is weak. Building our faith in the word of God requires practice and reminders that he is always with us and will never forsake us. Your child can benefit from certain reminders in scripture of their importance to God and his concern with their well being. The following scriptures may help.
Psal, 139:13-14 For you formed my inward parts, you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
Hebrews 10:35-36 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward, For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.
2 Timothy 1:7 “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self control (sound mind)”
A PRAYER OF PURPOSE
Distractions can be another tool the enemy uses to get your child off track during the course of their school day. Being reminded of their purpose not only in studying but being God’s beloved and example, (which aides them in their studying) will surely help them accomplish the tasks at hand. When a student is focused they are more likely to shake off insults, distractions and other attempts to keep them away from their goal. Having a purpose in God aligns every other activity that they perform during the day.The following scriptures are ones to help them remember their God given purpose.
Phillipians 2:12-13 Therefore my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
Psalm 138:8 The Lord will fulfil his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.
A PRAYER OF JOY
Depression can set in even at a young age. We want to remind students of the bigger picture in life when their daily interactions and frustrations seem to have a big impact on their world. Finding the Joy in God at a young age can stimulate a child toward’s greatness and much resilience. Try celebrating the morning with a praise song, or singing the song around the house until your child catches on to the words. Here are some scriptures that emphasize the blessing of the Joy of the Lord and reminds us its there even during frustrating times.
James 1: 2,3 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
Nehemiah 8:10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.
A PRAYER OF EXCELLENCE
What’s even more important to God than a straight A student is a child with a spirit of excellence. Pleasing God through our activities is a form of worship and comes with the joy of serving and righteous living. Your child can experience this through their school work if they keep the perspective that God is who they are working to please and he’s a loving guide to aid us in our efforts to try.
The following Scriptures help remind us our God can provide the spirit of excellence.
– Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit [was] in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
– And whatsoever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men
May your child have a fruitful year in the areas of protection, confidence, purpose , joy and excellence this school year. God bless your family.
